What the record says

Probable His marriage and his death are index entries matched by name, age and district, with no certificate read. His birthplace and his parents are one researcher's tree, and the census disagrees with it.

Born Q4 1862, Hitchin district · died Q3 1917, Hitchin, aged 54

WhenWhatStatus
Q4 1862 Born Birth registered at Hitchin. A baptism at St Mary's, Baldock, on 4 January 1863 (‘parents George & Martha, abode Willian’) comes from another researcher's tree, not from a register read here. Read with care
Q3 1863 His mother dies Martha Castle, registered at Hitchin. His father took him to her parents rather than his own. Documented
1871 With his grandparents at Norton End Aged 8, 'grandson' in the house of James and Elizabeth Giddins, with his widowed father listed as their son-in-law (RG10 piece 1365, folio 27). Documented
Q4 1882 Marries Caroline Wallis At Hitchin, registered in the December quarter of 1882, vol 3a p567, where the free index carries both names on one page. A tree gives October, which sits inside the quarter. The certificate has not been read. Documented
1891–1901 A farm labourer at Baldock At Middle Row in 1891 and at Norton in 1901, from the same tree. Read with care
1911 Nine children born His wife told the census nine children born, eight living and one dead. The dead one is Sidney Charles, who died at two. Documented
Q3 1917 Dies at Hitchin Aged 54, registered at Hitchin, vol 3a p607: a George W Castle, which fits a man born in Q4 1862. A search of England and Wales for a George Castle aged 54 between March 1916 and December 1917 returns this entry alone, and Hitchin has no George Castle death in 1916 at all. A match holder's own tree gave 1917 independently. The identification is by name, age and district; the certificate has not been read. Read with care

Where this comes from

Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.

His daughter Martha Maud, and the probate of his son · The tree

What is not established

  • The marriage certificate has not been read. It would name both fathers, and with them Caroline's.
  • His death certificate has not been read, so the place and cause are not known, and the year 1917 rests on an index entry matched by name, age and district. One tree still says 1916; the index has no George Castle death at Hitchin in 1916.
  • The census disagrees with the tree twice: it gives his birthplace as Baldock, not Willian, and his birth year as 1863, not 1862.
