Caroline Wallis
28 Feb 1862–1957
Derrick's great-grandmother. She remarried in 1920 and died in 1957 as Caroline James, which is why every tree that carries her as Caroline Wallis was hunting a death registered under another surname.

What the record says
Probable Her later life is documented and her marriage is an index entry. Her birth in early 1862 and her parents, Joseph Wallis and Sarah Field of Weston, rest on a baptism, two censuses and a run of Weston registers that name a Caroline Wallis and her family; no document yet joins that girl to Caroline Castle.
Born 28 February 1862, Weston (the year from her baptism; the day and month from the 1939 Register) · died 1957, registered at Hitchin as Caroline James
| When | What | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 Feb 1862 | Born at Weston, Hertfordshire | Baptised at Weston on 16 April 1862 as Caroline Wallis, daughter of Joseph, a labourer, and Sarah; her birth was registered at Hitchin in the March quarter of 1862 (vol 3a p230). The day and month, 28 February, come from the 1939 Register, which prints 1863; her age of 48 in the 1911 census fits 1863 and her 56 years 4 months in 1921 fits neither. The baptism, the 1871 and 1881 censuses and the 1957 death index all say 1862, so the later ages are a year or more out. The unnamed girl registered at Hitchin in March 1863 (p247) is not her. | Read with care |
| 16 Apr 1862 | Baptised at Weston | Caroline Wallis, daughter of Joseph, a labourer, and Sarah, in the Hertfordshire baptism register at Weston. She is the only Caroline Wallis baptised there in the early 1860s. | Read with care |
| 2 Apr 1871 | A straw plaiter of nine, in Maiden Street | Indexed as Caroline WALLACE, nine, daughter, born at Weston, a straw plaiter, in the household of Joseph Wallace, born about 1829, and Sarah, born about 1831, with eight brothers and sisters (RG10 piece 1366, folio 41, schedule 74). The index spells the surname differently from the baptism, which is why a search on Wallis missed her. | Read with care |
| 3 Apr 1881 | Single, 19, still in Maiden Street | Caroline Wallis, daughter, single, a straw plaiter, born at Weston, in the household of Joseph and Sarah Wallis with Emma, Eliza, Joseph, Sarah and George (RG11 piece 1417, folio 97, schedule 81). Eighteen months before the marriage at Hitchin in the December quarter of 1882. Her first child, Sarah Ann, was registered as a Wallis in 1882, and takes the name of the mother of this household. | Read with care |

Where this comes from
Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.
Her parents, Joseph Wallis and Sarah Field · The tree · Her daughter Martha Maud
What is not established
- Her parents are probable and not proved. No document joins Caroline Castle to the girl baptised at Weston in April 1862; the join is the name, the parish, the date and the age, and it is strengthened by what her own children and her parents' were called. The marriage certificate of 1882 would name her father, and it is the one document that would settle it.
- Her first marriage certificate has not been read. It would name her father, and ordering it is a purchase for the family to decide.
