The names she is filed under

One woman, six spellings of her maiden surname, three of her forename and four married surnames — and the indexes carry the worst of them. And a second woman, added on 20 September 2026 for the opposite reason — not because her spellings are hard to search, but because a tool offered to make them uniform.

An index cannot be searched for a person. It can only be searched for a spelling. This page exists because this archive learned that the expensive way: a file in which Ivone is the plaintiff sat unfound for weeks behind two letters.

Why this page exists

Ivone is recorded under six spellings of her maiden surname across five documents, three forenames and four married surnames. That is not unusual for a Portuguese woman in an English-and-Afrikaans record system. What is unusual is how much has turned on it.

TAB WLD 2545/1950 is the only file in which she is the plaintiff — the one in which she sued Kurt rather than being sued. It went unfound through months of searching because the index carries her as IVONE LUWENSKI, born FIGARETTO. Neither word is a spelling a person would choose. A search on the correct name could never have found it, and did not.

Every form below is given with the record it comes from. Where a spelling appears only in an index and in no document, that is said plainly — the difference matters, because an index corruption tells you about the cataloguer and a document variant tells you about the family.

Ivone de Figueiredo b. Lourenço Marques, 4 March 1922

Her parents' given names were the oldest unsolved question in this archive, and every route to them ran through an index that could only be searched on a spelling. THEY ARE NOW KNOWN — Joaquim Júlio de Figueiredo and Leónia dos Santos Mota — from her own birth registration and death certificate, photographed from the family's papers in September 2026. No index was involved. The spellings still matter, because the two documents disagree between MATA and MOTA.

Her forename

as writtenwhere it appearswhat it means
IVONE Most files, and her own 1953 marriage register The form this archive treats as canonical.
YVONNE TAB TPD 534/1948 The de Witt divorce. French spelling, in an Afrikaans court.
IVONNE TAB WLD 2225/1953 The Salkow divorce.

Her maiden surname

as writtenwhere it appearswhat it means
FIGUEIREDO TAB WLD 497/1951, WLD 2368/1951 The correct Portuguese spelling, and the one most searches start and stop with.
DE FIGUEIREDO TAB TPD 534/1948 With the particle. A surname search that anchors on the first letter can miss this.
MOTA FIGUEIREDO TAB WLD 1950/1948 The fullest form anybody wrote down, and the only record that gives her a second family name. It is the single most important spelling on this page.
DE FIGUERIDO TAB WLD 2225/1953 An 'e' lost. This is how NAAIRS carries the Salkow divorce, and it is why that file went unfound for months.
DE FIGUEITEDO TAB TPD 534/1948 A T where the R belongs. *** AND IT IS ON THE ARCHIVE'S OWN MOST-CITED FILE. *** TPD 534/1948 is her first divorce, from Johannes Antonie Oelofse de Witt, and this archive has cited it since September — while the index title spelt her maiden name a way nobody here had recorded. Found 11 October 2026 on the NAAIRS successor, searching the husband's name and reading the titles rather than counting them.
DE FIGUEREDO Her own marriage register, 1953 Written by a clerk in front of her, with her standing there. Not a transcription error at a distance.
FIGARETTO The NAAIRS index, TAB WLD 2545/1950 Not Portuguese, not a variant, not anything a person would write. An index corruption — and it is attached to the one file in which SHE is the plaintiff.
FIQUEIREDO The NAAIRS index, TAB MHG 7029/54 and KAB PIO 990 With a Q. Found 16 September 2026 by testing spellings nobody had written down. NAAIRS files a Johannesburg estate under it that the Union Gazette advertises as FIGUEIREDO — two indexes, two spellings, one man.

Her married surnames

as writtenwhere it appearswhat it means
DE WITT From 2 February 1948 Her first marriage. She is still being called this in files from 1951.
LUWINSKI From 19 June 1948 The spelling this archive is named for.
LUWINSKY TAB WLD 1950/1948 With a 'y'. One NAAIRS record only.
LUWENSKI The NAAIRS index, TAB WLD 2545/1950 An 'e' for an 'i'. This one spelling hid the restitution file for weeks.
SALKOW From 13 February 1953 The third marriage, over within the year.
DE FIGUEIREDO DE WITT FamilySearch, South Africa Civil Marriage Records FamilySearch files married names INSIDE the surname field, so she is indexed as one long surname. A search for FIGUEIREDO alone may not reach it.

The rule this archive now works to

No surname search counts as done until every recorded spelling has been tried. Applied to the Union Gazette on 16 September 2026, that rule turned a three-spelling sweep into a six-spelling one and made the resulting negative worth stating. Applied to NAAIRS, it shows that FIGARETTO, LUWENSKI and LUWINSKY each return exactly one record — and each of those records is invisible to the correct spelling.

It also cuts the other way, which is the part worth remembering. FIGARETTO and LUWENSKI appear nowhere in any African gazette at all. They exist only inside the archival index. So a spelling that finds a file can still be a spelling nobody ever wrote — useful for searching, useless as evidence about the family.

What each spelling actually returns 16 Sep 2026

Every form put to every index that could be reached, 16 September 2026. The column that matters is the last one.

Forty-one spellings were put to the indexes — twenty-one ways of writing Figueiredo and twenty of writing Luwinski, including many that appear in no record and were invented on purpose to see whether a clerk had ever made the same slip.

Corrected within the hour of first publishing. The first version of this table listed LAWINSKI and LUBINSKI among the spellings that returned nothing. They return three records each. Both turn out to be other families, which is what the table now says — but “nothing found” and “found, and not ours” are different claims, and writing the first when the second was true is precisely the error this page exists to prevent.

spellingNAAIRSgendatabasewhat it uniquely surfaced
FIGUEIREDO 43 65 The known corpus. Everything below is invisible to it.
FIQUEIREDO 4 4 THE FIND OF THE DAY. TAB MHG 7029/54 — FIQUEIREDO, AGOSTINHO VICENTE SEBASTIAO, a Portuguese man whose Johannesburg estate the Union Gazette advertises under FIGUEIREDO. Also KAB PIO 990/42707E, IMMIGRATION PAPERS JG DE FIQUEIREDO. Not claimed as kin — but no search on the correct spelling could ever have seen either.
FIGARETTO 1 1 TAB WLD 2545/1950. The only action in which Ivone is the plaintiff. Reachable by no other maiden spelling.
LUWENSKI 1 1 The same file, from the other side of the marriage.
LUWINSKY 1 1 TAB WLD 1950/1948, the first divorce.
FIGUEREDO 6 10 KAB IRC 1/4/19 and IRC 1/3/1 — two immigration files. Neither is hers.
FIGUERIDO 2 2 TAB WLD 2225/1953, the Salkow divorce, as NAAIRS spells it.
FIGUERDO 1 1 SAB BAL 7 — a temporary permit for a Goanese C FIGUERDO. A different community, but it proves the permit series is indexed.
FIGEIREDO · FIGUEREIDO · FIGUEIREDA 1 each 1 each One divorce apiece, none connected. Recorded so that nobody searches them twice.
LEWINSKI · LEWINSKY 5 · 11 12 · 18 A REAL FAMILY, AND NOT THIS ONE. German-Jewish Johannesburg — Erwin, Bella born Berman, Meinhard, Ingeborg Ursula born Leske. Tested because Kurt came out of East Prussia and the slide from Luwinski to Lewinski is exactly the slide a clerk makes. It did not happen. Recorded as an exclusion rather than left as an open possibility.
FIGUERETTO · FIGARETO · FIGUEIRDO · FIGUIREDO · FIGUERREDO · FIGUERIEDO · FIGUEIRETO 0 0 Nothing, anywhere. Invented spellings that no clerk ever made.
LAWINSKI 3 3 A REAL MAN, AND NOT OURS. Israel Blogos Lawinski, suing Georg Marthinus Kleynhans in the Transvaal in 1903 — TAB ZTPD 8/678, 888/1903. Twenty-five years before Kurt was born and in the wrong court. Excluded.
LUBINSKI 2 3 Also real, also not ours. Erich Lubinski's estate TAB MHG 4010/73, and Johanna born Schaefer, 1922–1992. No connection offered or found.
LUWINSK (truncated stem) 0 9 gendatabase does stem matching and NAAIRS does not — the same query returns 9 and 0. A reminder that two indexes over the same records are not the same instrument.
MOTTA 20 324 EXAMINED AT NAAIRS AND EXCLUDED. All twenty are Indian or Italian — Motta Naik, Subrai Motta, Motta di Livenza, Motta Makanya. NOT ONE IS PORTUGUESE. MOTA is one of Ivone's recorded names and MOTTA is one letter from it, so this needed testing; it is a dead end and now says so.
LUWENSKY · LUWINSKA · LUWINSKE · LUWINSKIE · LUVINSKI · LUWINZKI · LUWINSCHI · LOWINSKI · LUWINSKII · LUWANSKI · LUWINSKIJ · LIWINSKI 0 0 Nothing. Twelve invented spellings that no clerk ever made.
FIGUEIRA 40 164 A DIFFERENT PORTUGUESE SURNAME, not a misspelling of hers, and no Ivone among the forty. Worth the look anyway for what the shape of it shows: SIXTEEN OF THE FORTY ARE IMMIGRATION PAPERS AT KAB, IN THE PIO AND IRC SERIES. That is where the Portuguese community in South Africa is indexed.
FIGUEIRED 1 — KAB PIO 33143E — IMMIGRATION PAPERS HA FIGUEIRED. The surname truncated by the index itself, with the final O simply gone. Nobody would search for this; it was found by asking what a clerk might do to the word.
MOTA 278, all read 15,102 *** READ IN FULL 11 OCTOBER 2026, AND THE NAME IS A FALSE LEAD FOR A REASON NOBODY HAD GUESSED. *** MOTA IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN ARCHIVES IS OVERWHELMINGLY A SOTHO, TSWANA AND NGUNI SURNAME, NOT A PORTUGUESE ONE — the bulk of the 278 are NATIVE ESTATE files and magistrates' case files from the Free State and the Witwatersrand. EIGHTEEN ARE PORTUGUESE AND NOT ONE IS HERS: an estate (TAB MHG 5905/69, DA MOTA, JOAO — the only Portuguese Mota estate in the index), two Cape immigration files, a Portuguese consul-general, two Brazilian diplomats and nine Witwatersrand court files. NONE AT LOURENÇO MARQUES. *** AND THE TWO-KEYWORD TEST SETTLES IT IN ONE LINE: MOTA AND FIGUEIREDO TOGETHER RETURN EXACTLY ONE RECORD *** across all twenty repositories — TAB WLD 1950/1948, her own first divorce, held here since September. MOTA+MARQUES zero. FIGUEIREDO+LOURENCO zero. The gap this row stated is closed and the answer is no.

A dash means the spelling was not put to that index rather than that it returned nothing. The distinction is the whole point of this archive’s negatives and it is not going to be blurred here.

Where the Portuguese are actually filed 16 Sep 2026

Across every Figueiredo, Fiqueiredo, Figueredo, Figuerido and Figueira search run on 16 September 2026, the immigration records cluster in one place: KAB — the Cape Town Archives Repository — in the PIO and IRC series. PIO is the Principal Immigration Officer; IRC the immigration control files. Sixteen of forty Figueira records are there; so are JG de Fiqueiredo, HA Figueired, Juonet Figueredo, Maria T Figueredo and five more Figueiredos. NOT ONE OF THEM IS IVONE. What the pattern is worth is a corrected assumption: this archive had been treating naturalisation and alien files as central-government records at SAB in Pretoria. THE INDEXED IMMIGRATION SERIES FOR PORTUGUESE ARRIVALS IS AT CAPE TOWN, and a request pointed at the wrong depot would have come back empty for the wrong reason.

What the exercise was actually worth

One genuinely new record, and it is a good one. Estate TAB MHG 7029/54 belongs to a Portuguese man who died in Johannesburg in 1954. The Union Gazette advertises him as FIGUEIREDO, Agostinho Vicente Sebastiao. NAAIRS files him as FIQUEIREDO. Two indexes, two spellings, one man — and until 16 September 2026 nobody had ever typed the one with a Q.

He is not claimed as a relative. Figueiredo is a common Portuguese surname and nothing connects him to Ivone but a city and a decade. What his file carries is a death notice, and a death notice names parents — which is the one thing this archive cannot get for her.

And one real exclusion. Kurt came out of East Prussia, and the slide from Luwinski to Lewinski is exactly the slide a clerk makes. There is a Lewinski and a Lewinsky family in Johannesburg in the same decades — Erwin, Bella born Berman, Meinhard, Ingeborg Ursula born Leske. They are not this family. That is worth as much as a find, and it is recorded here so that it is never re-opened as a hopeful possibility.

The same problem in the other lines

nameforms
Kurt Luwinski LUWINSKI · LUWINSKY · LUWENSKI · LUWWINSKY The same three spellings as his wife's married name, and for the same reason — they come from the same court files. A FOURTH WAS ADDED ON 17 SEPTEMBER 2026 AND IT COMES FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTRY AND A DIFFERENT KIND OF RECORD. The AROLSEN ARCHIVES index Kurt's mother as LEIBHOLZ, Auguste, maiden name LUWWINSKY — WITH A DOUBLED W. It is the only instance of that form this archive has seen, it is German rather than South African, and it is a reminder that the spelling drifted in both hemispheres independently. Anyone searching German records for this family should try it.
The Wear family WEAR · WEARE · WEIR · WARE WEARE IS NO LONGER HYPOTHETICAL. The marriage index for the third quarter of 1842 at Stepney carries WILLIAM WEARE, which on every other fact is the William Wear who was a saddler at Bermondsey in 1851 and a harness maker at Jamaica Road in 1871. The other two forms remain untested in any record this archive holds, and are listed because the Y-DNA project was searched on all of them and the possibility should not be quietly forgotten.
Booyzen BOOYZEN · BOOYSEN · BOOIJZEN · BOOIJSEN A connected line, with the same problem in Dutch rather than Portuguese.
Caroline Wallis (not Walls) WALLIS — settled · WALLS — withdrawn SETTLED 17 SEPTEMBER, AND THE SITE'S OWN CONTRADICTION IS CLOSED. This page recorded that the archive used Wallis seven times and Walls five, and that neither was asserted. THE GRO BIRTH INDEX DECIDES IT. Searching Castle births at Hitchin on MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME returns SIX CHILDREN UNDER WALLIS — George William 1884, Ada May 1887, Fredrick James 1889, Agnes Kate 1892, Florence Margaret H 1901, Ernest Albert C 1904 — AND NOTHING AT ALL UNDER WALLS. That is the registrar recording her maiden name at each birth, six times over twenty years, and it is better evidence than one census household in which her widowed father was written down as Joseph Walls. WALLS IS WITHDRAWN. The census entry stands as what an enumerator heard once — AND IT NO LONGER STANDS ALONE AGAINST THE INDEX EITHER, because the 1911 census has CAROLINE'S OWN FATHER LIVING IN HER HOUSE at St Mary's Cottages, Baldock, enumerated as JOSEPH WALLIS. The same man, two censuses, two spellings, and the registrar's six agree with the second. ONE CAVEAT ADDED 17 SEPTEMBER, AND IT LIMITS THE SEARCH RATHER THAN THE CONCLUSION: the six are not the whole family. MARTHA MAUD'S OWN BIRTH ENTRY — Q3 1895, Hitchin, volume 3A page 561 — CARRIES NO MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME AT ALL in the index; the field is blank. So a search on the mother's maiden name finds the children whose entries happen to have been indexed with it and silently drops the rest, and the woman this whole archive is descended from is one of the ones it drops. The 1911 census says Caroline bore NINE. Seven are named. Six to nothing is still the answer on the SPELLING; it was never the answer on the sibship.
Giddins / Giddings GIDDINS · GIDDINGS Derrick's three-times-great-grandparents of Norton End, Baldock. BOTH CENSUSES — 1861 and 1871 — WRITE GIDDINS. The tree that first named them writes GIDDINGS. The enumerator wrote what he heard twice, ten years apart, and agreed with himself; so GIDDINS is used here with Giddings noted. IT MATTERS MORE THAN THE OTHERS ON THIS PAGE, because two living DNA matches carry the surname and a search on the wrong spelling would miss them.
Martha Maud / Maude Castle MAUD · MAUDE Her own birth registration — Hitchin, third quarter 1895, volume 3A page 561 — spells her MARTHA MAUD. The tree that supplied her exact date of birth spells her MARTHA MAUDE, and this archive has used both. MAUD is the registered form.
