Martha Giddings
c. 1841–1863
Derrick's great-great-grandmother. She is in neither household she belonged to. Her existence is attested by what the 1871 census says about her widower and her son.

What the record says
Documented The 1871 census names her only through the relationships of the people left behind, and that is enough.
Born c.1841, Baldock district · died Q3 1863, Hitchin
| When | What | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1861 | Out of her parents' house | Aged about 20 and not in their household at 9 Cottages, Norton End (RG9 piece 816, folio 69), which lists George, John and Emma. | Documented |
| Q3 1862 | Marries George Castle | Registered at Hitchin. The index gives a Castle and a Giddins on the same page. | Read with care |
| Q4 1862 | A son | George William, registered at Hitchin. Baptised in January 1863, from a tree. | Documented |
| Q3 1863 | Dies | A Martha Castle death registered at Hitchin, vol 3A p188. A second Martha Castle death in 1865 cannot be ruled out on the index alone, because the death index before 1866 carries no age. | Read with care |
| 1871 | Attested by the people left behind | George Castle, 30, is enumerated as son-in-law in her parents' house and a boy of 8 as grandson. Both relationships run only through her. | Documented |
Where this comes from
Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.
What is not established
- Her death date is the Q3 1863 entry, which cannot be separated from the 1865 one on the index alone.
- The register indexes spell her Giddings and the census spells the family Giddins; both are carried here.
