What the record says

Documented He is in three censuses and a banns entry; his parentage is a best candidate.

Born baptised 1819, Aldenham

WhenWhatStatus
1819 Baptised at Aldenham Son of William Hawkins and Mary. He is the only John the register offers in the window, the other Johns being excluded by age. Held as a best candidate: the register cannot show that this child is the Red Lion man. Read with care
1841 Boarding away from home Most likely the John aged 20 at Aldenham Checkers, in a household of three with Katherine Nicholls and William Kimpton (HO107 piece 438). The 1841 census, which the work list nominated, could not give his parents. Read with care
18 Sep 1842 Banns with Emma Larkin Both resident at Aldenham. What is read is the banns entry; the wedding itself has not been seen. Documented
1851 At Letchmore Heath Head, agricultural labourer, aged 39 (HO107 piece 1714, folio 19), with Emma and four children. The age sits eight years from his 1871 age, and the baptism agrees with 1871. Documented
1871 At the Red Lion Cottages Aged 51, agricultural labourer, eight in the household, every one of them born in the parish (RG10 piece 1380, folio 10, schedule 58). Documented

  • His age is given as 39 in 1851 and 51 in 1871, which cannot both be right.
