Family
Each person is marked by where that line came from, in words as well as colour.
On the individual lines:
- Robert Larkin (parent): probable
- Mary Burch (parent): probable
- John Hawkins (spouse): banns read
- John Hawkins (child): probably died young
- Mary Larkin (sibling): married William Bilby, 1843
- Robert William Larkin (sibling): probably the other couple's
- Joseph Larkin (sibling): probably the other couple's
- Thomas Larkin (sibling): probably the other couple's
What the record says
Documented Her baptism, her banns and two censuses are records. Her parents are probable: the register names a Robert and a Mary, and only one of two Robert-and-Mary couples at Aldenham can have had her.

| When | What | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 Mar 1822 | Born at Aldenham | Baptised on 24 March, daughter of Robert, a labourer, and Mary Larkin; the only Emma Larkin of her generation in the parish, and the birth year matches the 1871 census to the year. | Documented |
| 16 Oct 2026 | Which Robert and Mary were her parents | There were two couples of that name at Aldenham. Emma was born 272 days after Robert William (4 June 1821), so she cannot share a mother with him, and he is the son of the widow Mary born at Edgware about 1800. That leaves the couple of the 1814 banns, who in 1851 are Robert, 72, and Mary, 69, both born at Aldenham, with daughters Mary and Elizabeth at home. Burials add to it: a Robert Larkin of 45 was buried in September 1832 and a Mary Larkin of 62 in February 1860, fitting the widow and her husband, while Mary of 72 (1855) and Robert of 79 (1859) fit the other pair. This is an argument from birth dates, censuses and burials, and no document names her as their daughter. | Read with care |
| 18 Sep 1842 | Banns with John Hawkins | Both resident at Aldenham; the banns were called, and the wedding has not been seen. | Documented |
| 1851 | At Letchmore Heath | Wife, aged 29 (HO107 piece 1714, folio 19). | Documented |
| 1871 | At the Red Lion Cottages | Wife, aged 49 (RG10 piece 1380, folio 10). | Documented |
| 12 Oct 2026 | Her maiden name found | There was no Emma among the twenty Hawkinses of Aldenham in 1841, which was the clue that she was a Hawkins only by marriage. | Corrected |
Where this comes from
Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.
What is not established
- Her parents are probable and not proved: no document names her as the daughter of the couple of the 1814 banns, and the argument rests on one birth interval and the identification of Robert William with the son in the widow's household.
- Her death is not established.
