What the record says

Probable Her maiden name is in the banns and the marriage entry of 1800; her own baptism has not been found.

WhenWhatStatus
20 Apr 1800 Banns with William Hawkins At Aldenham, both resident. 'Of this parish' in a banns entry is residence at the time and not birth. Documented
5 May 1800 Marries William Hawkins At Aldenham, both of the parish; the surname is written Appleyard in the marriage entry as in the banns. Documented
1749–1809 No Appleyard baptism of her generation at Aldenham All 18 Appleyard baptisms there were read: a John-and-Hannah family ending in 1749 and a William-and-Ann family beginning in 1809, with nothing in between. The register is well covered for those decades, so the absence is real. Read with care
30 Jan 1822 Buried at Aldenham, aged 41 Entered as the wife of William Hawkins, from Aldenham Gate, so born about 1780 or 1781. The entry does not give her maiden name; she is identified by her husband's name and the nine children of 1801 to 1819. A daughter Mary had been buried in April 1820, aged 7. Read with care

Where this comes from

Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.

What is not established

  • Her own baptism has not been found. A surname-only search of Hertfordshire Baptisms on Findmypast (16 October 2026) returned 24 Appleyard entries, 21 of them at Aldenham, and no Mary before 1851; a free index finds one Appleyard baptism in Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Buckinghamshire in 1750 to 1800, an Ann at Marylebone, and nine Mary Appleyards in England in 1762 to 1782, every one in Yorkshire. That shows where those indexes find the name and not where she was born. Aldenham holds 21 Appleyard baptisms in that set in all, and none is a Mary.
  • Her parents and her birthplace are unknown. Of the nine Mary Appleyards baptised in Yorkshire between 1762 and 1782, one was baptised at Kippax on 23 January 1780; that is a coincidence of dates and not a lead.
