What the record says
Probable His baptism, his marriage and his death are register and index entries matched by name, parish and age; the censuses of 1851, 1871 and 1881 fit them, and no document names him as Caroline's father. His age in the censuses and at death differs by up to three years.
Born Weston, Hertfordshire, baptised 22 July 1827 · died Q4 1912, Hitchin, aged 82
| When | What | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Feb 1827 | His parents marry at Weston | William Wallis, bachelor, and Mary Foster, spinster, both of Weston, at Holy Trinity; witnesses James Watson and William Kent. Joseph is baptised five months later. | Documented |
| 1827 to 1912 | His wife is his second cousin | Joseph's father, William Wallis, was the son of Ann Phillips; Sarah's mother, Elizabeth Phillips, was the daughter of Ann's brother James. William and Elizabeth were therefore first cousins, and their children Joseph and Sarah were second cousins. The register names the brother and sister by baptism, the marriage of James Phillips and the baptisms of his children, and the link is by name, parish and the middle name of a Wallis daughter, not by a certificate. | Read with care |
| 22 Jul 1827 | Baptised at Weston | Joseph, son of William and Mary Wallis, a labourer, at Weston Holy Trinity (FreeREG, transcribed by a volunteer from the register). He is the only Joseph Wallis baptised at Weston between 1825 and 1833. An older Joseph Wallis, baptised there in 1822 to George and Betsey, is a different man. | Documented |
| 30 Mar 1851 | Married, 23, an agricultural labourer, in Weston village | With Sarah, his wife, aged 21, and James Field, a lodger of 24, all born at Weston (HO 107 piece 1709, ED 10c, folio 190, schedule 117, FreeCEN). Sarah's and James's baptisms are on her page. His widowed mother is in the same village the same night: Mary Wallis, 42, born at Wallington, a labourer's widow and a pauper, with Emma, Ann, Hesther, Eliza, Jeremiah and William and a granddaughter of one (schedule 81). Eliza, Jeremiah and William were baptised at Weston to William and Mary Wallis in 1842, 1845 and 1848; the census puts each of them a year older than the baptism does. The head of that house is a widow, so William Wallis was dead. | Read with care |
| Q1 1851 | Marries Sarah Field | At Hitchin, vol 6 p711. The index names Joseph Wallis, Sarah Field, Charlotte Bigg and George Dearman on that page, which is two couples, and the Bigg and Dearman pair are the other. Not a certificate. | Read with care |
| 6 Jul 1851 | His first son, James, is baptised at Weston | Father Joseph, a labourer; mother Sarah. Probably named for Sarah's brother, the lodger of the census. | Documented |
| 16 Apr 1862 | His daughter Caroline is baptised | As Caroline Wallis, daughter of Joseph, a labourer, and Sarah, at Weston. | Documented |
| Apr 1871 and Apr 1881 | In Maiden Street, Weston, with nine children | Indexed Wallace in 1871 and Wallis in 1881; a straw-plaiting household. The 1871 index puts his birth in 1829, two years after the baptism. A family called Field lodged with them in 1881. | Read with care |
| Q4 1912 | Dies aged 82 | At Hitchin, vol 3a p729. One Joseph Wallis of that age in the district between 1881 and 1915; a Joseph Wallis who died in 1900 was an infant, and is not him. | Read with care |
Where this comes from
Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.
What is not established
- No certificate has been read. His marriage certificate of 1851 would name his father and Sarah's, and his death certificate his age and the informant.
- His father's death, and his grandparents, are on his father's page; every rung there is a register or an index entry and none is a certificate.
