Each person is marked by where that line came from, in words as well as colour.

On the individual lines:

  • Thomas Field (parent): married 1791
  • Sarah Wallduck (parent): married 1791
  • James Field (child): a lodger in his sister's house, 1851
  • David Field (sibling): a bricklayer at Weston in 1851

What the record says

Probable His marriage is a register entry. Which William Field it was is the problem: the baptism of 1802 is the better fit, because a William Field was buried as an infant in March 1798 and the William baptised in 1797 to the same parents may be he, but his age at burial in 1879 fits the baptism of 1797 slightly better than that of 1802.

Born Weston, Hertfordshire, baptised 24 January 1802 · died 1879, Weston, aged 80 (probably)

WhenWhatStatus
19 Mar 1791 His parents marry at Weston Thomas Field and Sarah Wallduck, at Holy Trinity. Their children baptised there: Sarah 1791, Thomas 1793, Mary 1795, William 1797, David 1799 and William 1802. Documented
8 Mar 1798 A William Field is buried as an infant The William baptised on 19 March 1797 to Thomas and Sarah would be under a year old, and a second William is baptised to the same parents on 24 January 1802, which is what a family usually did when the first had died. The register does not say whose child the infant was. Read with care
24 Jan 1802 Baptised at Weston William, son of Thomas and Sarah Field. His father is buried at Weston on 4 April 1803, a labourer. Read with care
2 Jun 1823 Marries Elizabeth Phillips Both of Weston Holy Trinity; witnesses James Wallis and Mary Warren. A different William Field, baptised in 1788 to William and Sarah Field of Weston, would have been 35. Documented
1824 to 1832 Four children baptised Emma (23 May 1824), James (25 Feb 1827), Sarah (12 Jul 1829) and Charlotte (4 Nov 1832), to William and Elizabeth Field, a labourer. Documented
29 Aug 1879 A William Field of Weston is buried aged 80 Which gives a birth in 1798 or 1799. It is two years from the baptism of 1797 and three from that of 1802, so the age is no help in choosing between them, and it is the only William Field of a plausible age buried at Weston after 1832. Where this comes from

Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.

What is not established

  • Which William Field it was is not settled. The baptism of 1802 is the better fit if the infant buried in 1798 was the William of 1797, which the register does not say, and the household of William and Elizabeth Field has not been found in the 1851 census in FreeCEN.
  • His mother Sarah Wallduck belongs to a Wallduck family at Weston that had six children baptised between 1762 and 1777, and she is not one of the six; her own baptism has not been found.
  • Thomas Field, his father, cannot be told from the other Thomas Fields baptised in Hertfordshire between 1750 and 1775, of whom there are eighteen.
