Where this comes from
Each line of the table above names the record it rests on in its third column, and the grade at the top says how well the whole is evidenced. What is not established is said under its own heading below. How the grades and the labels on the chart are decided, and every source this archive holds.
What is not established
- Her death or burial has not been found. An Elizabeth Field buried in the Hitchin workhouse in 1876 aged 83 is five years older than a birth in 1798 and is not claimed.
- Her grandparents are William and Esther Phillips, who as William Philips and Esther Wright married by licence at Weston on 21 February 1775; a William Phillips, yeoman, was buried there on 20 October 1793. Esther remarried in 1795 as a widow and is probably the Hester Harwood buried at Weston in 1831 aged 75, and probably the Hester Wright baptised at Stevenage in 1754 to John and Sarah Wright; nothing here says who William's parents were, and John Wright's own parents are two candidates, a John baptised at Stevenage in 1717 to George Wright, a labourer, and Mary Titmus (married 1708), and another in 1719/20 to Robert Wright, a butcher and victualler with a will of 1753, and Mary Hurst (married 1717); Sarah Wright, wife of John, a labourer, was buried at Stevenage in 1770 aged 53, which leans to the labourer's son and settles nothing; if he is, Mary Titmus (born about 1687, buried 1769) is his mother and probably the daughter of William Titmus, yeoman, of Stevenage (a will of 1722, unread) and Mary Harvey (a marriage licence of 1684), which is a candidate and no more; a William Phillips, yeoman, of Weston made a will in 1760 that has not been read.
